The 10th Annual Shining Star Gala was a huge success.

The 11 th Annual Shining Star Gala is an opportunity for us to celebrate the people who make a difference in the lives of students in Ward 8, the most under-served community in Washington, DC. It is also an opportunity to close the roughly $4,000 per-student gap between the cost of providing an excellent education and our public funding. The 10th Annual Shining Star Gala will succeed because of the dedication of our supporters.

We offer the following four opportunities, in addition to attending, to support Thurgood Marshall Academy through the 11th Annual Shining Star Gala.

  • Honor-a-Student Ad: $500 (Quarter-page b/w ad with your logo, a picture of a student you have mentored or tutored, and the story of your relationship.)

Auction Information

The 11th Annual Shining Star Gala will feature a silent auction during the cocktail reception. Do you have or know of something that would make a good auction item? Contact Jenny Crawford at (202) 563-6862 x 107 or by e-mail. You may also download our auction donor form and mail or fax it to the school.

We are particularly interested in the following items:

  • Stays at 4- and 5-star Washington, DC hotels such as the Ritz-Carlton, the Four Seasons, and the Hotel Monaco
  • Resort and ski getaways
  • DC area pro-sporting tickets (i.e., Redskins, Wizards, Capitals)
  • Dinner at trendy DC restaurants such as Citronelle, Cityzen, and Kinkead's
  • Hard-to-get concert tickets
  • Golf outings

Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteers are crucial to our successful event, and we are excited to involve interested people. We will ask volunteers to dress in formal (black tie optional) clothing and attend one short training.

The day of the gala, we need volunteers for the following:

  • Setting up the space
  • Greeting attendees
  • Registering attendees
  • Monitoring the silent (and live) auction
  • Working with students
  • Closing out the auction
