Marshall Academy seeks volunteers to assist us with our efforts to advance student achievement.
Volunteers help us with:
After School Homework HelpAre you available to tutor Thurgood Marshall Academy students after school? On Mondays through Fridays throughout the school year, Thurgood Marshall Academy matches students from all grade levels with volunteer tutors who provide one-on-one support as part of the Homework Help Program. The tutoring sessions take place in the library from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm Mondays through Fridays (4:00 pm to 6:00 pm on Tuesdays). We are seeking tutors for all subject areas including math, science, history, English, law, and Spanish.
Law DaysDoes your law firm want to support our law-themed curriculum? Local law firms host our 9th grade students in monthly workshops designed to familiarize students with the US Legal system through mock trials, round table discussions, and interactive case studies. Georgetown University Law Center's Street Law Clinical Program provides curricula and training for host firms.
Law Firm TutoringInterested in volunteering with youth but can’t seem to find the time? Thurgood Marshall Academy offers a distinctive law firm tutoring program to help our students succeed. Our law firm partners sponsor weekly tutoring for 11th and 12th graders in their offices. As a result, our students have developed positive relationships with role models, sharpened their academic and professional skills, and reinforced their college aspirations.
MentoringDo you want to make a difference in the life of TMA student? Thurgood Marshall Academy’s mentor program pairs students with professionals throughout the District who offer support and guidance through these critical high school years. To become a mentor, volunteers commit themselves to monthly group “Mentor Days” and are asked to make weekly telephone calls and coordinate an additional, individual outing each month with their students. This is a great way to have a positive impact on the life of a TMA student! Interested? Fill out an application!
We also have shorter volunteer opportunities.
