- Thurgood Marshall Academy was named “Most Improved School in DC” by Great Schools/Business Week. For more information, please click here.
- April 2009: Thurgood Marshall Academy senior Dayna Hudson receives the Stephen J. Trachtenberg Scholarship to the George Washington University on Friday, April 3. Dayna is the firstand only charter school student to receive the scholarship, which has not been open to charter students in the past. This year, nine students city-wide received the award. - January 2009: Arne Duncan, US Secretary of Education, visits Thurgood Marshall Academy and participates in a college scholarship application event for our juniors and seniors. Click here for more details.
2008
- December 2008: The second BBC America segment airs on December 16, 2008, and features interviews with two students and Academic Director Alexandra Pardo. To read more about the feature and to see the clip, please click here.
- December 2008: BBC America visits Thurgood Marshall Academy on December 2, 2008, to speak with students and administrators. The first of two segments airs on Thursday, December 4, 2008, and features four Thurgood Marshall Academy students discussing their views on President-Elect Obama and the effect his presidency will have in the community. - September 2008: Abdi Hashi and Demetrius Suggs are selected to represent Thurgood Marshall Academy and the Washington, DC, metropolitan area at the Anti-Defamation League's National Youth Leadership Mission in November.
- August 2008: Thurgood Marshall Academy made Adequate Yearly Progress in both reading and math as required by the federal No Child Left Behind Act for school year 200708. The results indicate that 70.19% of TMA students were proficient in reading (up from 42.59% in SY 200607) and 60.58% of TMA students were proficient in math (up from 50.00% in SY 200607). One-hundred percent of tenth-grade students were tested. These scores represent a 28-point gain in reading, and an 11-point gain in math compared to last year’s scores. - June 2008: The Class of 2008 graduates. As in previous years, 100% of our graduates have been accepted to college. The entire Thurgood Marshall Academy community wishes them the very best and looks forward to learning of their future successes.
- May 2008: Thurgood Marshall Academy receives full accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges & Schools.
- May 2008: The 10th-grade health classes organized and facilitated a community-wide health fair that was attended by one-hundred community members and 20 health care organizations.
- April 2008: The 8th Annual Shining Star Gala, which honored the school’s founders and was attended by over 300 guests, raised over $300,000 to support school programs.
- April 2008: As part of Global Youth Service Day, mentors and their mentees, AmeriCorps volunteers, and members of the Green Club planted a butterfly garden and built four raised beds that grow flowers and vegetables on the school’s grounds.
- February 2008: On February 25, 2008, Karen Hastie Williams, retired partner from Crowell & Moring LLP and former clerk of Justice Thurgood Marshall, visited the school and spoke with students about her career and life experiences.
2007
- August 2007: Our 2007 DC CAS scores are announced, and they confirm Thurgood Marshall Academy's status as one of the top-performing schools in the region. We ranked 3rd overall in the District compared to other open-enrollment high schools. Our scores are more than 6.5 times higher than the DC CAS scores of other high schools in Wards 7 and 8 to which our students would traditionally be assigned, and our scores exceeded the average scores of all DC open-enrollment high schools by 17% in reading and 26% in math.
- June 2007: The Class of 2007 graduates; 100% of the Class of 2007 was accepted to one or more colleges. Albert Herring, Assistant US Attorney with the US Department of Justice, helped us celebrate their accomplishments at the Thurgood Marshall Academy Commencement Ceremonies.
- April 2007: The 7th Annual Shining Star Gala raises over $300,000 to support student achievement.
- February 2007: Thurgood Marshall Academy closes on a New Markets Tax Credits transaction that will save the school approximately $50,000 a month and support the programs that help our students succeed.
- January 2007: The Public Charter School Board votes to grant Thurgood Marshall Academy a full continuance of our charter.
2006
- November 2006: Our flag football team wins the
league championships!
- October 2006: Thurgood Marshall Academy hosts
a college fair, sponsored by Lydia's House,
for students living east of the Anacostia River.
- June 2006: The Class of 2006 graduates; 100% of the Class of 2006 was accepted to one or more colleges.
- April 2006: The 6th Annual Shining Star Gala,
held in our new facility, raises over $250,000
to support student achievement.
- February 2006: Justice Stephen Breyer speaks with Thurgood Marshall Academy students as part of CourtTV's inauguration of their Careers in Justice curriculum.
2005

- August 2005: We move in to our new facility, opening the 20052006 in the state-of-the-art school building. We expand our student population to 321.
- June 2005: The Class of 2005, our first senior class, graduates with 100% college acceptance.
