Celebrating Our Roots
This year’s Celebrating Our Roots featured artists and writers from the Harlem and New Renaissance movements. Students represented Alain Locke, Carter G Woodson, and Marcus Garvey in the “Philosophy Room”. 2019 Celebrating Our Roots Program. The “Podcast to Power” room. The “Have You Seen This/Heard That” room featured award-winning authors and musicians of today. Students use graffiti art to share lyrics from their favorite artists. The “Moonlight” Room featured artists from the black LGBTQ community. Posters, pictures and quotes celebrating Black Excellence. Mahogany Books founder Derrick Young, along with Panama Jackson and DJs 2-Tone Jones and One Luv, share how hip-hop is influenced by literature. Closing program featured models, dancers, and spoken word performances.
