After-School Clubs

After-school clubs encourage students’ personal development, provide opportunities to build leadership skills and connect students with their communities. Each year, we offer approximately 15 clubs for students, including the community service club Teen Action, Green Club, Debate Team, Student Government, yearbook, drama, and a literary journal. HBG (Happy Black Girls) are just some of the extracurricular activities that focus on character development.

Clinical Counseling

Students have access to a clinical counselor who can help them manage their emotional needs.

Law Day

Local law firms host our 9th-grade students in monthly workshops designed to familiarize students with the US legal system through mock trials, roundtable discussions, and interactive case studies. Previous Law Day topics have included desegregation, civil rights and discrimination, gang laws, the First Amendment, consumer rights, and the death penalty.

Law Firm Tutoring

One Tuesday per month, 11th graders travel to our partner law firms after school to complete their homework with the help of legal professionals. Tutors at law firms work one-on-one with students to prepare for tests, complete projects and discuss college and career goals. Dinner is provided for all students at the law firms. Our Partners page lists participating law firms.

Athletics

Athletics at Thurgood Marshall Academy encourage the principles of participation, develop character through competition, and instill the values of teamwork and cooperation. Thurgood Marshall Academy offers co-ed flag football, cross country, swimming, boys’ and girls’ basketball, cheerleading, track and field, and volleyball.

Senior Seminar

College counseling staff use the Senior Seminar curriculum to guide all seniors through the college application process. The Senior Seminar meets every other day during the school day to help students set goals for the future, research college options, prepare college essays, and create résumés. By the end of their senior year, students will produce a senior portfolio that will help them apply to college.

Summer Prep

Thurgood Marshall Academy’s Summer Prep Program provides incoming 9th-grade and 10th-grade transfer students with an introduction to the academic and behavioral demands of succeeding at a college preparatory high school. Computer classes and cultural and athletic enrichment activities are also offered to broaden the experiences and skills of incoming students. To encourage parental involvement, Summer Prep also holds workshops for parents on supporting their child’s education and beginning to prepare for college. The Summer Prep program consists of an intensive six-week program, beginning in June and ending in late July.

Tutoring

Homework Help is Thurgood Marshall Academy’s after-school study space designed to provide all students with the resources they need to understand and complete their homework. On Mondays through Fridays, Homework Help offers students one-on-one tutoring, access to faculty, a chance to work collaboratively with other students, and a variety of enrichment activities. Programs staff provide a snack for Homework Help participants in the library after dismissal. Tutors include school faculty and staff and trained students from George Washington University, Georgetown University, and Howard University.

Youth Judicial Internship Program

Students in this program intern for judges appointed to the DC Superior Court system and the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. As interns, students apply the lessons learned in the classroom and think critically about the legal system. Interns learn how a judge prepares for a case, how a judge makes decisions, and what makes a sound legal argument. The group then meets each Friday to discuss their experience and hear from guest speakers.
