School remains a top-performing school in the District with Impressive Growth
WASHINGTON – Results on the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) show that Thurgood Marshall Academy (TMA) is the highest achieving high school East of the River,and remains one of the top-performing high schools in the District of Columbia.
The school’s growth was more than twice of the District’s average in both English Language Arts and Geometry assessments. TMA students had a 13.6% gain in ELA from last year and a 5.5% gain in Geometry.
Administered in the Spring each year, the PARCC exam is the Common Core-aligned assessment of K-12 students, indicating college and career readiness. Results are scored on a level of 1 to 5; a Level 4+ indicates students are on track to leave high school college and career ready.
The chart below shows the percentage of TMA students who met or exceeded college ready expectations (Level 4+), compared to city-wide averages by subject.
|English Language Arts||41.6||29.3|
“These results are a testament to our students’ hard work and the teachers and staff who prepared them,” said Richard Pohlman, TMA’s Executive Director. “We are thrilled with students’ growth and remain committed to helping all of our students have the tools necessary to succeed in college and beyond.”
In addition to students outperforming their peers at the 4+ level, more than 63% of TMA students scored in the 3+ category (approaching college readiness) on the ELA assessment and 49% scored at 3+ on the Geometry assessment.
“One reason these scores are so impressive is that each year, more than half of our incoming students arrive with math and reading skills below grade level,” said Pohlman. “They have to do intensive work to get on grade level and score proficient on a rigorous test.”
Students continue academic excellence throughout their time at TMA, and go on to enroll in and attend college at rates far above the District and national averages. Since 2005, 100% of TMA’s graduates have been accepted to college. More than 84% of graduating students in the Class of 2017 enrolled in college within one year of graduation.
