Quiara Boalds | TMA Graduate – Class of 2017
After graduating from TMA, Quiara attended UAlbany. She left there and enrolled at Anne Arundel Community College which, at the time, was a better financial fit for her. There, she earned her Associates Degree in Psychology. From there Quiara attended the University of Maryland and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology. She is currently working on her Master’s in Psychology with a concentration in Clinical Psychology at NYU.
Since leaving TMA, Quiara is most proud of her internship in Italy, where she worked alongside psychologists and biologists studying HPV and its connection to mental health in diverse communities. Quiara’s first taste of studying abroad was participating in the Ndarkwai experience in Tanzania while a student at TMA. This experience sparked an interest in cross cultural opportunities. Quiara states that “Traveling abroad has significantly shaped my decision to focus on clinical psychology and my desire to help underserved communities”.
Quiara is no stranger to hard work. During her high school years, she earned a certification and experience in the pharmaceutical industry. This preparation helped shape her future career choices.
At TMA, Quiara was a student who strived to be the best academically, but in hindsight, she wishes that she had taken more time to be in the moment, enjoying her youth and finding a better balance between school and personal life. Self care is high on her list of priorities, and a key lesson that she has learned is that “if something does not serve you, it’s important to let it go”.
To the current TMA students, Quiara recommends that if you are not sure about next steps after high school or if finances are an issue, consider community college first, and then transfer to a four year university. She also recommends researching the job market to identify high demand roles that align with your interests. Additionally, if college isn’t the right fit for you, look into certifications or licenses through community colleges or specialized programs.
“Your road to success may be unconventional. It may not be the straight path that you envisioned your freshman year of high school, but it’s your path“.
Quiara’s journey after TMA was one of self reflection and thoughtful planning to determine the best steps for her to meet her educational goals. This takes courage, fortitude and an awareness of self to keep moving forward. #WarriorStrong!
