The Road to College

Thurgood Marshall Academy’s College Access Initiative plays a central role in achieving the school’s mission. While many schools make promises to high-quality education and commitment to students, Thurgood Marshall consistently honors our pledge to prepare students to succeed in college.

Every year, the College Counseling Team engages students by having activities planned throughout the year that support our college going mission, such as Senior Seminar, college visits, and more.

“The college counseling team has been very intentional when introducing me to schools with great education programs (my intended major) and schools that give a lot of financial aid,” said TMA senior, Demoni Jones.

Seniors are provided with resources to help them move forward with applying for the college of their choice. Students receive focused guidance through the college research, application, and enrollment process through their participation in Senior Seminar, a required, year-long class taught by the College Counseling team. The curriculum walks students through the process of completing college applications, drafting college and scholarship essays, and preparing for the transition to college life.

“I have gained the much-needed support I’ve been lacking. Before, there was no one to push me when I wanted to give up, so at times I did give up. Now, I would never let the thought of quitting come into fruition thanks to Mr. Mitchell and Mr. Bruno,” said Jones.

Throughout the year, students also meet with college representatives to get a better understanding of college life. Students have met with colleges and university representatives from University of Louisville, University of Delaware, Virginia Commonwealth University, Northwestern University, Brandeis University, Georgetown University, Hampton University and Swarthmore College, where they received informal information, asked questions about college life, tuition and more.
