Art Teacher Nafeesah Shabazz Wins Mayor's Art Award

Thurgood Marshall Academy’s art teacher Nafeesah Shabazz won the 2011 Mayor’s Art Award for Teaching, presented at the Kennedy Center in April. Ms. Shabazz was nominated by then-Academic Director Alexandra Pardo for her outstanding work over the past two school years, including new projects like the self-portrait collages in Art II and the Celebrating Our Roots Black History Month show. The Mayor’s Arts Award is the highest honor given by the District of Columbia in recognition of artistic excellence and service among artists, arts organizations, and arts patrons in the city.
